Count your clean outs, then use the rule of 2 and 4 for a fast read: outs × 4 by the river on the flop, outs × 2 for the next card. Compare that to the price the pot is offering with the pot odds calculator. If your chance to hit beats the pot odds, the call is profitable.
Outs are the unseen cards that improve your hand to a likely winner. A flush draw has 9 outs (the remaining cards of your suit); an open-ended straight draw has 8. Count only clean outs — cards that actually give you the best hand.
Use the chart above, or the rule of 2 and 4: multiply outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (one card). Nine outs is about 35% by the river, or 20% on a single card.
A flush draw (9 outs) completes about 35% of the time from the flop to the river, and about 19.6% on the turn card alone. That means you’ll miss roughly two times out of three by the river.
An open-ended straight draw has 8 outs (two ranks, four suits each), completing about 31.5% by the river. A gutshot has 4 outs and completes about 16.5%.
Percentages assume all your outs are live (not held by an opponent) and count only cards that give you the best hand. Provided for reference and education.
