Pot odds are the price the pot is offering you to keep playing. If the pot is $100 and you must call $25, you’re risking $25 to win $125 — so you only need to win one time in five (20%) for the call to break even. Any hand with more than 20% equity is a profitable call in that spot.
You rarely know your exact equity at the table, so use the rule of 2 & 4: multiply your outs by 4 on the flop (two cards to come) or by 2 on the turn (one card to come). A flush draw has 9 outs — about 36% to hit by the river. Compare that to the equity the pot demands, and the decision makes itself.
Pot odds compare the current pot to the amount you must call. Divide your call by the total pot after calling: call ÷ (pot + call). That percentage is the equity your hand needs to break even. Expressed as a ratio, it’s pot ÷ call to one.
A fast way to turn outs into equity: with two cards to come (on the flop), multiply your outs by 4; with one card to come (on the turn), multiply by 2. Nine outs on the flop is roughly 36% equity.
Call when your equity is at least the equity you need to break even. If you have 36% equity and only need 20%, the call is profitable. Add implied odds — money you expect to win on later streets — for close spots.
Outs are the unseen cards that improve your hand to a likely winner. A flush draw has 9 outs; an open-ended straight draw has 8. Count only clean outs that actually give you the best hand.
