The total chips in play are fixed — players times the starting stack. As the blinds climb each level, the number of big blinds left in the field shrinks. The tournament effectively ends when only a handful of big blinds remain in play (heads-up, blinds eating stacks). The estimator finds how many levels of blind growth that takes and multiplies by your level length.

It depends on the field size, starting stacks, and how fast the blinds rise. A small home-game tournament of 10–20 players with 20-minute levels usually runs three to five hours; deeper stacks and slower blinds run longer. The estimator above gives a figure for your specific setup.
